Abstract
This thesis aims to analyze the impact of traumatic childhood experiences toward inner conflicts in the novel The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides. There are two objectives of this research. The first one is to identify the types of traumatic childhood experiences found in the novel. The second is to describe how does the impact of traumatic childhood experiences toward inner conflicts in the novel The Silent Patient. The theory used in this research is psychoanalytic social theory by Karen Horney, specifically traumatic childhood experiences and inner conflict. Psychoanalytic social theory by Karen Horney was used to examine how traumatic childhood experiences have an impact toward inner conflicts. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive. The result of this research are there are two kinds of trauma found in the novel namely interpersonal trauma and impersonal trauma. There are also the impact of traumatic childhood experiences toward inner conflicts found in the novel namely idealized self-image and self-hatred.
